Our Story

Founded by Jeanne and Alan Bertenshaw in 1987, Matisse began with a passion for bringing exceptional international design to New Zealand. What started as a specialist furniture business has grown into one of the country's leading destinations for authentic international furniture, kitchens, wardrobes, lighting and interior design.

We have built enduring relationships with many of the world's most respected manufacturers, some for over three decades, carefully curating a collection defined by craftsmanship, innovation and lasting design.

Our Approach

After more than 30 years on The Strand in Parnell, Matisse opened a new flagship Auckland showroom at 130 St George's Bay Road—a custom designed destination created to inspire architects, designers and homeowners alike.

Together with our Christchurch and Queenstown showrooms, these spaces allow you to experience the quality, materiality and craftsmanship of every collection firsthand.

Supported by decades of collective expertise, our experienced design team works closely with clients to create timeless, considered residential and commercial spaces that are uniquely their own.
